Hiking in Sierra Tramuntana

Several stages of the 90-kilometre-long GR-221 route run through the Sierra de Tramuntana.

In 2001, the sierra was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Cultural Landscape category.
We recommend two stages of the trail in the Sierra de Tramuntana that are our particular favourites because they border the coast, avoid the crowds and take you into the heart of nature. Two ideal ways to explore Mallorca on foot.

1) The route from Valldemossa to Deià is 10.3 kilometres long. Before beginning this hike, take time to explore the village of Valldemossa, with its Carthusian monastery known as the Real Cartuja, the church of Sant Bartomeu and the Palace of King Sancho. The composer Chopin and his lover, the writer George Sand, spent the winter of 1838 in Valldemossa. They stayed in cell number 4 at the Real Cartuja, now a museum.

Once you reach Deià, we invite you to take a leisurely stroll to the 16th-century parish church of Sant Joan Baptista and the house of Robert Graves, renowned author of I, Claudius.

post-hiking-2 Your reward will be lunch at El Olivo, the restaurant of the Hotel Belmond La Residencia, sitting under a jasmine-canopied porch that boasts the finest views of the village..

After lunch, if you still feel like walking you can continue on foot, and if not you can hit the road—but whatever you do, don’t miss the village of Sóller and the church of Sant Bartomeu with its Baroque structure, modern facades and Gothic Revival bell tower. Visit Can Prunera, a museum with works by Picasso, Kandinsky and local painter Miquel Barceló, and then take the 1913 electric tram down to the port to cap off your day with a taste of Sóller’s famous ice cream.

Order a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice (a must) and a slice of Isabelle and Inés’s lemon meringue pie. Oranges have a long history in the Sóller Valley.
beer Over 600 years ago, Arab seafarers brought the citrus fruit to Mallorca and turned this place into the lushest orange orchard on the island. From Son Mico you can see how the island’s most iconic peaks –Puig de Bàlitx, L’Ofre and Puig Major (the highest in the Balearic Islands)– are connected.

2) The next route we recommend for hiking in Mallorca is as follows:

Andrach – Estellenchs (or Valley of the Stars)
Andrach Pass – Sant Elm
La Trapa – Coll de Sa Gramola

catle You can make this hike shorter if you wish, but you won’t want to miss the vistas from the Mirador des Animes viewpoint or the climb up Torre des Verger. Built in 1579 and perched on the edge of a cliff, this tower has a narrow iron staircase leading up to breathtaking views of Mallorca’s northern coast. In Estellenchs, visit the bell tower of Sant Joan Baptista and its picturesque port. And, as always, we’ve got a very special recommendation to reward your efforts. Return to Andratx and stop at Vent de Tramuntana, one of  the best-kept secrets on the island, for an unforgettable meal in the garden where the owners grow their own vegetables.
