Mucho antes de convertirse en el pintor de la cort

Mucho antes de convertirse en el pintor de la corte de Felipe IV, Diego Velázquez fue un joven sevillano que recorrió estas mismas calles.

Su historia comienza muy cerca de Cristine Bedfor Sevilla: en la Iglesia de San Pedro, donde fue bautizado; en su casa natal; en el taller de Francisco Pacheco, donde aprendió el oficio; y en las plazas, mercados y tabernas que inspiraron sus primeros cuadros.

Aquella Sevilla vibrante y cosmopolita del Siglo de Oro, llena de comerciantes, artistas, viajeros y conversaciones, fue el escenario donde comenzó a formarse una de las miradas más influyentes de la historia del arte.

Seguir hoy la ruta de Velázquez es descubrir otra ciudad. Una Sevilla de talleres, iglesias, patios y encuentros que todavía permanece escondida entre las calles del centro histórico.

Y quizá esa sea la mejor forma de conocerla: caminando.

Long before becoming the painter of King Philip IV’s court, Diego Velázquez was a young Sevillian walking these very streets.

His story begins just steps from Cristine Bedfor Sevilla: at the Church of San Pedro, where he was baptized; at his birthplace; in Francisco Pacheco’s workshop, where he learned his craft; and among the markets, taverns and squares that inspired his earliest paintings.

That vibrant and cosmopolitan Golden Age Seville, filled with merchants, artists, travellers and lively conversation, became the backdrop for one of the most influential artistic visions in history.

Following Velázquez’s route today is a way of discovering another side of the city — a Seville of workshops, churches, courtyards and encounters still hidden within the historic centre.

And perhaps that is the best way to experience it: simply by walking.
