Juan Melgar is a lawyer who is passionate about sailing and has become a nautical bookseller who decided to change his career and take over the helm of the prestigious Robinson Nautical Bookshop of Madrid.
All sorts of nautical publications and charts are issued from his bookshop for seafaring professionals and amateurs, in addition to all types of activities related to the maritime world. That passion for the sea, which he primarily gives free rein to in the waters of Menorca, where he has been sailing for over 20 years, led him to embark upon another business adventure along with other partners associated with the island to cover a need and revive a tradition that has long been abandoned in the Port of Mahon.
Thus emerged ‘Els Bots Berguiners’, a company devoted to maritime passenger transport through the internal waters in the Port of Mahon.
The berguiners, which comes from the word ‘bargain’, traditionally provided this service from the eighteenth until well into the twentieth centuries. Now, using wholly sustainable solar electric propulsion boats, the tradition has been revived, but adapted to today, and thanks to this residents of and visitors of Mahon can get around the waters of the port and access places like Isla del Rey, Es Castell, the Lazareto, etc., to enjoy them without having to travel by land.
The service can be hired via an app designed just for this purpose or by telephone.
Now sailing around the Port of Mahon, one of the largest natural ports in the world, is a pleasure… with no noise, no pollution and just the click of an app.
A Menorcan at heart who has made life easier and more pleasant for all of us who don’t want to miss anything on the island.
